The Palace Theatre was located in the Hotel Erbgroßherzog, which longtime Leer operator Heinrich Buschmann sold the hotel in 1906 after earning the necessary money in three years in the United States. The Palace Theatre was built at the rear of the hotel and the theatre opened its doors in 1913. Shortly after the war concluded is when both the theatre and the hotel were used as occupiers and would later have a brief closure.
It had a original capacity of 349 seats, but was upgraded to 369 seats (with high-backed armchairs) following a three-week December 1954 renovation. As of December 1954, only the foundations remained in the renovation, but the foyer was fitted with then-modern Fischer lights, a candy stand and a cloakroom. The walls of the auditorium were paneled with wood and covered with Acella fabric, and the boxes were removed. This was followed by CinemaScope installation in 1958.
Both the hotel and the Palace Theatre were closed in 1972 after its building was destroyed by a fire.
