The Oakboro Theatre launched on November 11, 1938 with Jack Randall in “Land of Fighting Men”. One of the biggest hits for the venue was the showing of “Gone With the Wind” in June of 1940. The 200-seat theatre was taken over by new owners with a refresh relaunching June 24, 1941 as the Mae Theatre. Its opening film was Robert Sterling in “I’ll Wait for You”.
R.A. Goodman operated the Mae Theatre and the nearby Norwood Theatre less than 15 miles away. He would also open the Locust Level Highway 27 Drive-In Theatre in March of 1948. Goodman sold the theatre in July of 1948. On July, 18, 1948, the newly renamed Little Theatre opened with Gregory Peck in “12 O'Clock High”.
The theatre’s final operators, Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Owen operated through showtimes of February 2, 1958 when flames broke out not long after the final showtime of Glynis Johns in “All Mine to Give.” Oakboro, Locust, Norwood and Albemarle fire crews - seven trucks in total - responded battling the fire with only the theatre being a total loss. The movie theatre was not rebuilt.
