Albemarle Drive-In

Lewis J. Whitely and partner Gilbert Lawton Faw opened their second area drive-in theatre on March 15, 1948 with Robert ‘Buzz’ Henry in “Danny Boy”. The Albemarle Drive-In was located on what was once called Charlotte Road. The $40,000 drive-in had a 35' by 35' screen and accommodated 250 vehicles. It was opened on a 9 acre plot in the southwest part of town near Long Creek on 2001 West Charlotte Road (now Main Street) in March of 1948.

The pair had opened the Concord Airport Drive-In as Lewis J. Whitley was the owner and operator of the Airport. Under new operators, the theatre moved to hard “R” and “X” rated films for its 18th year of operation. The Albemarle Drive-In continued with adult fare into the 1982 season when advertisements stopped perhaps ending its film run during the 35th year of operation. The space was home to a flea market through 1986. Upon closure, the land was not reused.

The land is completely overgrown with trees. Only part of the entrance drive still exists, but that is unrecognizable. Today, that small area around where the marquee once stood is a parking place for trucks.

Perhaps the only fragment of the drive-in remaining is where the marquee was located at the entrance. There is a power pole that may have once connected the marquee to the electrical grid. But that is about it.
