Athol’s Community Hall was typical of those built in many small towns on the plains. One of the few survivors, it is a two story brick building holding a small library and a large auditorium at the rear.
According to the KS Historical Society, it was constructed from April to October 1925. The balcony was equipped with a silent movie projector. In the 1926 edition of Film Daily Yearbook in is listed as the 173-seat Liberty Theatre.
It is unclear how often this equipment was used, but it was likely on an irregular schedule. Athol was never larger than just under 300 people, and has now dwindled to about 40.
The building today is in decent shape considering the size of the town, and is used as a local history museum.
