The Theatre Royal was opened on 4th December 1778. It was almost entirely rebuilt in 1820. In 1869 it was renovated and re-decorated. In February 1892 it was extensively altered to the plans of noted theatre architect Frank Matcham and reopened on 9th May 1892. Seating was provided in orchestra stalls, dress circle balcony and galley levels. It served as a live theatre until around 1932 when it went over to screening films. It was demolished in 1933, and the Regal Cinema was built on the site, opening on 1st January 1934 (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
