Coliseum Theatre

Located in Radcliffe, Lancashire, now part of Greater Manchester. Former music hall theatre strongman George Testo Sante (real name George Mulhall) decided to become a theatre owner/operator and had the Grand Opera House built for him by 1905. From all accounts it was a rather modest building and was used as a music hall. The stage was 38ft deep and there were twelve dressing rooms. It was equipped to screen films in 1912 and in 1915 “Birth of a Nation” was screened here and the name had been changed to Grand Theatre. George Mulhall died in 1916 and the Grand Theatre was closed in 1917. It briefly reopened as the Palace Theatre.

On 9th November 1923 it reopened as the Coliseum Theatre. By 1928 it was operated by the Bradley family of Blackburn & Burnley and came under their chain of cinemas named New Empire (Burnley) Ltd. It was equipped with a Western Electric (WE) sound system in 1930.

It was still operating a a cinema when it was destroyed by a fire on 7th November 1945.
