The Model Theatre’s only claim to fame appears to be that it was the first constructed in the City of Syracuse’s new code for movie houses requiring fireproof projection booths. James Kearney built the 400-seat Model Theatre as part of a multi-unit commercial building situated at the corner of South Geddes Street and Gifford Street in Syracuse’s Westside neighborhood. The Model Theatre was built in 1912 and launched either late in 1912 or in early-1913.
The Model Theatre was a silent movie house that appears to have closed in 1926. It would play photoplays generally supported by a serial and accompanied by live piano music. The Model Theatre was replaced by a long-running grocery store. The building was still standing in the 2020’s but appeared to be vacant and in subpar condition.
