Cinema in the Power Station

Located on the 3rd floor of Turbine Hall B, in the refurbished iconic former Battersea Power Station. The Cinema in the Power Station is operated by the operators of the almost adjacent 3-screen Cinema in the Arches (see separate Cinema Treasures entry, which includes a detailed history of Battersea Power Station and the re-development that resulted in these two cinemas).

The Cinema in the Power Station was scheduled to open on 11th November 2022 with the Marvel superhero adventure “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” in Power Station (Screen) One. However, despite shows being advertised for that day, I believe that in the event, the screenings didn’t start until the following day. Power Station Screen Two didn’t open until 25th November 2022, when children’s favourite “Matilda the Musical” opened in Power Station Screen One and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” moved across to Power Station Screen Two. Seating capacities are Power Station Screen One: 213-seats and Power Station Screen Two: 137-seats. In addition, both auditoriums have four two-seat sofas across the rear, in a ‘VIP area’ which is separate from the rest of the seating.

Worth noting that it’s the first independent Dolby Cinema site in the world

The premises licence includes plans on the last page.

The plans are from FDA Architecture, with the client listed as Empire Design. (?) According to their website, FDA Architecture were also involved with The Cinema at Selfridges.

Seating capacity is marked on the plans, but the low resolution renders them virtually illegible! I think Screen 1 is given as 221 fixed + 6 disabled + 13 VIP; total 240. This is at odds with the current figure of 213 regular seats given in the current Cinema Treasures description; I have no idea which is correct…

Screen widths as scaled off the plans are ~10m (= ~33ft.) wide for the Dolby Cinema and ~9.5 (= ~31ft.) for Screen 2.

Not sure if this therefore qualifies as the smallest Dolby Cinema screen size; it surely must be one of them.

There are 213 + 2 mobility seats in the Dolby Cinema (screen 1) plus four VIP boxes (unknown number of seats per box) per the ticket booking page on their official site.

I visited the Cinema in the Power Station on Friday 17th February 2023 to see the Marvel Comics' adaptation “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”. In a nice touch, alongside the trailers and adverts, there was a short history of the power station, which included clips from some of the many films that have used the site as a location over the years.
