The small town of Ossian, Iowa had been without a movie house since L.E. Palmer had closed the Princess Theatre permanently in August of 1929 without converting to talkies. The townspeople had to drive about ten miles away where the Postville Theatre had talkies.

That changed ten years later when, in November of 1939, the Ossian Theatre debuted in downtown Ossian. The first film was Brian Aherne in “Captain Fury” supported by The Three Stooges short, “Oily to Bed, Oily to Rise”.

The television era was generally unkind to the majority of movie theatres operating in small towns such as Ossian. The town’s population never got above 900 citizens and the theatre struggled into the 1950’s. The Ossian Theatre closed permanently following the May 19, 1957 with Mamie Van Doren in “Running Wild”.
