According to a cutting from the Western Morning Mail, dated 4th February 1994, held in the Cinema Theatre Association Archive, the Pavilion Cinema, in Llangollen, Denbighshire, was the town’s first home to moving pictures.
The article further states that “the cinema was later [date not specified] moved into the Town Hall and then across the road into a purpose-built cinema called the Dorothy Cinema.
The Pavilion Cinema does not appear in the cinema trade directories, so either it by-passed them and/or film shows were on a part-time basis only. The Town Hall Cinema opened in the late-1920’s/early-1930’s; perhaps the move from the Pavilion Cinema was a result of the arrival of sound. Then the Dorothy [Dorothea] Cinema opened in 1932, although, contrary to the implication in the cutting, the Town Hall Cinema and the Dorothy Cinema both operated during World War II.
The article says that the Pavilion Cinema stood “on the A5, where now stands a garage and service station”. There is a Texaco service station on Berwyn Street (the A5) and that is, indeed, “across the road” from the former Dorothy Cinema in Castle Street.
