Located in Ossett, 3-miles to the west of Wakefield. The magnificent Town Hall was opened on 2nd June 1908. In 1910 it was granted a Cinematograph Licence and began screening silent films. Seating was provided in stalls and circle levels.
In 1966 the Northern Theatre Organ Trust were granted permission to install a theatre organ which had originally been housed in the Rialto Theatre, Bebbington in the Wirral. The 3 manual 13 ranks Compton/Christie organ is made from several former organs. The console was originally installed in the New Victoria Cinema, Victoria, London. The console platform is from the Plaza, Chorley. Other parts are from the Odeon, Swiss Cottage, London, the Regal, St. Leonards and the Greengates Cinema, Bradford. The organ chambers are located under the stage. The first concert on the instrument was held on 4th January 1970, played by organists Watson Holms & Hubert Selby. The concert was recorded by the BBC for the radio programme “The Organist Entertains”. The organ is played regularly on Sunday concerts.
On 6th May 1988 English Heritage gave the Ossett Town Hall a Grade II Listed building status. It is used for banquets & special events.
