Located in the Southside of the city in the Tradeston district of the Gorbals, a notorious tenement housing slum area. The Ardgowan Picture House was opened in 1923 by James Hamilton. It was a conversion of a former cork factory to the plans of architect Eric A. Sutherland. Around 1929 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. It was always an independently operated cinema and from all accounts it was a ‘rough’ cinema with unruly audiences. It was closed in 1963 and was demolished in 1965. Weir Street no longer exists today.
