Located in the south side of the city in the Gorbals district, an area known for its notorious slum tenement housing. The Crown Cinema was opened in 1930 by J.M. Drummond who had operated a previous Crown Cinema on the site (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).

The new Crown Cinema was designed by architectural firm Lennox & McMath in a Jazz age style with zig-zag patterns and sunburst motifs in the auditorium. In April 1948 it was sold to George Palmer and became part of his Associated G.P. Cinemas chain. It was soon renamed George Cinema, which had become the favoured name for most of the cinemas in the chain.

When improvements to the Gorbals district began, the population decreased, and the Crown Cinema was closed in September 1970 and was demolished with the rest of the district.

A parade of shops at ground floor with three storeys of flats above now occupies the site.
