Majestic Theatre

The Riverside Daily Press March 19, 1914, reported the Kenwood Theatre was to be opened at 637 Main Street on April 1.

“M.M. Hearn, the well known and popular realty man is to undertake the roll of theatre magnate and manager of the new theatre and associated with him in the new project is J.S. Sheafe, a New York Capitalist. F. W. Osborne has been engaged to remodel and equip the selected location".

“A new floor is to be laid, put in at the proper slope to afford a clear view of the screen from all parts of the house, which will have seating capacity for about 400. The machine to be used is the latest improved motor-driven Powers 6-A machine, a model which has been passed by the National Board of Fire Underwriters and equipped with a fine imported lens. The screen upon which the pictures will be thrown is to be one of the strikingly attractive features of the new theatre —a solidly built, plaster screen, with an absolutely perfect finish. Clear-cut pictures, without the distressing flicker found in some houses, will be one of the new theatre’s principal attractions".

“Warren Patton, for almost a year employed at the Grand Theatre, will be the operator for the Kenwood. Patton is a skilled operator, with a record for making a change of reels in 22 seconds, which is close to the fastest time which has been made".

The opening attractions of the Kenwood Theatre, now listed with 350 seats, were D.W. Griffith’s version of Charles Dickens “A Cricket On The Hearth”, a comedy, “Double Crossed” and a serial “Our Mutual Girl”.

On March 25, 1915, the Press reported the name of the theatre had been changed to the Majestic Theatre under the ownership of G.E. Waltz.

On July 2, 1917, it was announced the Majestic Theatre would be closing indefinitely and by 1918 it was referred to as the old Majestic Theatre and Riverside later changed its street numbering to give the address 3637 Main Street.
