Del Rio Theatre

Advertisements for the Del Rio Theatre can be found in the Riverside Press Enterprise of the late-1930’s and 1940’s. It was touted as a “Family Budget Theatre.” It was also listed in the local phone directory but it evidently closed sometime before 1950. The Film Daily Yearbook of 1949-50 listed it with 400 seats.

On May 26, 1950 the Del Rio Theatre had a small listing in the Independent Theatre Guide of the Los Angeles Times said it was opening the next day. After the 1950 opening the Del Rio had a three-month run of second run films but no listings could be found in the Times after August of 1950.

However, Boxoffice Magazine of September 9, 1950 said that Sidney Cahen had closed the house after an experimental operation and had no future plans. The fate of the Del Rio Theatre is probably best explained in a Boxoffice article on October 14, 1950: It was said Fox West Coast was reopening the nearby Golden State Theatre with a new marquee, seating, carpeting, curtains and equipment. The competition of Fox’s Golden State Theatre would have probably been too much for an independent operator.

There is no evidence that the Del Rio Theatre ever opened again and today the location is distinguished by a high rise.
