The City Drive-In Theatre was opened by Meyer A Berenson of the Redwood and State Theatres (and later, he would take on the Ritz Theatre). The ozoner had a soft launch on August 17 and 18, 1950 with short subjects. Its grand opening was on August 19, 1950 with a showing of Randolph Scott in “The Nevadan” and a midnight showing of the Marx Brothers in “Love Happy” supported by the Max Fleischer cartoon, “All’s Fair at the Fair”. The City Drive-In was managed by Tony Nastasi at its launch.
The venue hosted sunrise Easter services. Berenson also filed an official complaint in the hearings about Hollywood studio’s booking practices in the 1950’s that led to the Paramount consent decree. The City Drive-In was offered for sale in 1962. It has since closed and has been razed.
