Plans for the Auburn Mall were approved in 1976 for Arlen Shopping Centers. The mall’s development was gradual finally launching theatre-less on August 7, 1979 with JC Penneys as an original anchor. Cinema Centers Corporation of Boston added a twin screen facility to the plaza next door to the Porteous department store. The Auburn Mall Cinemas launched November 25, 1981. “ET” became on the venue’s most successful engagements in 1982.

In September 1986, Hoyts Entertainment took on the 111-screen Cinema Centers Corp. chain acquiring the Auburn Mall facility. As the multiplex and megaplex eras were upon them, Hoyts decided to close out aging twin and single-screen operations. Hoyts operated the Auburn Mall until December 13, 1990 closing with Macaulay Culkin in “Home Alone” & Tom Selleck in “Three Men and a Little Lady”. They opened the 10-screen Auburn Cinemas the next day while additionally closing the Northwood Cinema and the Lewiston Cinemas in the Promenade Mall.
