The University and Town Skating Rink was opened in 1909 in Chesterton, just outside (at that time) of the city boundary. In early-1919 it was drastically altered and refurbished, reopening on 18th September 1919 as the Rendezvous Cinema. A ballroom was also created in part of the building and there was a small café. Both the cinema and ballroom had their own orchestra. On 15th July 1931 the building was destroyed by fire within two hours.
The site was cleared and a new Rendezvous Cinema was built to the designs of architect and owner Charles Naylor. (It has its own page on Cinema Treasures as the Rex Cinema).
