Richard Buchanan built a new theatre in downtown Hydro that would have a 30-year run. Buchanan opened the Hydro Theatre on April 1, 1937 with Gene Autry in “Ride, Ranger, Ride”. It was a replacement for the Wilson Theatre that had opened in 1925. It was the second movie house with that name as the former Wilson Theatre/Royal Theatre carried the Hydro Theatre nameplate for a brief period.

Buchanan sold the Hydro Theatre nine months later in 1938. From that point forward, a number of operators ran the theatre into the 1960’s. Other than a few short periods of closure in the 1950’s, the small town of Hydro was able to support movie theatres for more than 50 years.
