Music Hall

The Cincinnati Music Hall (Springer Auditorium) was opened on May 14, 1878 with the opera “Alceste” by Gluck and Beethoven’s “Erocia” Symphony. The building was designed by architect Samuel Hannaford in a magnificent Venetian Gothic style. Seating is provided in orchestra and two horseshoe shaped balconies. In October 1930 the Music Hall was wired for sound and the movie “Noah’s Arc” starring Dolores Costello was screened with free admission. The Music Hall continued into the mid-1940’s screening occasional film presentations.

The Music Hall has hosted concert performances by Frank Sinatra, The Ink Spots, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Velvet Underground, Sony & Cher, Janice Joplin, B.B. King, Grateful Dead, Miles Davis & Ella Fitzgerald.

It is home to the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati POPS Orchestra, the Cincinnati Ballet, Cincinnati Opera and the May Festival Chorus. In 2016-2017 it underwent a $143 million renovation.

The Music Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 20, 1970. On December 2, 1974 it was recognised as a National Historic Monument.
