Wordsley Manor House Cinema

Located in Wordsley to the north of Stourbridge, Staffordshire. Wordsley Manor House was built in 1727, for the Black Country industrialist Holt family. In 1924 the Firmstone family took ownership of the Manor. Eldon Firmstone installed a Christie 3 manual 7 ranks organ on the ground floor in 1933, and opened a 50 seat Cinema on the top floor in 1934. Films were shown to the public, however local magistrates were upset as Firmstone didn’t have a Cinematograph Licence. This eventually lead to ending public showings at the Manor. The Christie organ was recorded once by organist/owner of the Manor House Eldon Firmstone playing “How am I to Know?”. The instrument was broadcast by the BBC during World War II. The organ is still in situ, but is currently unplayable.

The beautiful Art Deco style Cinema complete with its sunburst design velvet curtain is still in private use by the residents of the Manor House in 2021.

Since 9th April 1976 Wordsley Manor House is a Grade II* Listed building.
