Located on S. Broad Street between Lombard Street and South Street in the Washington Square West district of downtown Philadelphia. The Broad Street Palace opened with stage shows and moving pictures in 1910. The theatre had a buff terra cotta front. Stage shows and movies were the initial policy when the theatre opened in 1910. A fire in December 1911 damaged the stage, which was set back against the wall. After the fire it programed movies only until the 1920’s when it was closed (it had closed by 1926) and converted into a nightclub. The building was demolished in the early-1980’s.
The site became a community garden for decades. In 2014, Southstar Lofts, a new residential building was built on the block. Thanks to Irvin R. Glazer for his research on the theatre, for his Philadelphia Theatres A-Z hardback book.
