When the front section of the Rivoli Theatre burnt down on January 9, 1977, a decision was made to build a twin screen cinema on the site, and also restore the former Rivoli Theatre auditorium which became a performing arts center named George W. Newman Theatre (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
The twin screen Williams Cinemas 1 & 2 opened on August 27, 1982 with Ben Cross in “Chariots of Fire” & Aileen Quinn in “Annie”. A third screen was added in 1998. It was closed for refurbishment on June 22, 2015. In July 2016 it was equipped with three digital projectors and reopened on July 29, 2016 as the Center Cinemas at the Williams Center. Seating is provided for 189, 89 and 65.
It was announced in January 2023 that the theatre would close on February 26, 2023. It had reopened by September 2023 as the Williams Center for the Arts. By 2025 it also presented performing arts & concert events.

A third screen was added in 1998. It was closed as a first-run theater on February 26, 2023. It later reopened as the Williams Center for the Arts, screening classic movies, foreign movies, independent movies, and special showings, as well as performing arts and concerts. It no longer shows first-run films.
