BRENTWOOD ROUTE 101 DRIVE-IN THEATRE

The Brentwood Drive-In was opened by the Brentwood Route 101 Drive-In Theatre Inc. around 1962 or 1963. It was the second drive-in theatre to operate in the town. In 1966 the New England Dragway opened and the noise from the raceway drowned out the sound in the drive-in, which was soon closed.

In 2021 the site is used as a well for a spring water company.

According to the New Hampshire Secretary of State’s archives, ‘Brentwood, Route 101 Drive-In-Theater Inc.’ registered as a business on April 18, 1962.

I was born in 1966 and grew up in nearby Exeter. I never remember this place being open, but the screen and marquee were still there into the 1980s. I drove by there hundreds of times.

At one time, this road was the major thoroughfare connecting the Portsmouth/seacoast New Hampshire area to the Manchester, NH area. Since then, Route 101 a 4 lane, superhighway has been built parallel to old Route 101. This road where the theater was is now called Route 27.

I was talking to an older gentleman about this place once and he remembered the marquee stating, “Now Playing – Field Mice” No doubt, someone with a sense of humor having fun regarding the overgrown lot.
