Opp Drive-In

The City of Opp had a huge explosion of theaters popping in throughout early-1952. As of March 12, 1952, the Dixieland Drive-In was opened to the public in the city of Opp. Lightning struck the second time for the city of Opp, and the one-and-only George S. Owen, who had been operating the Royal Theatre for many years, took its turn to open the Opp Drive-In.

The Opp Drive-In opened on June 5, 1952 with Dennis Morgan and Betsy Drake in “Pretty Baby”, along with a short entitled “Ham In Hale”.

Many local companies including the Danley Furniture Company (who installed air-conditioners for the main office) have done their work, but the Wenzel Projector Company of 2509-19 South State Street of Chicago, Illinois also took its role for the projector, and the Capital City Supply Company of 161 Walton Street NW of Atlanta, Georgia also done their supplement as well on supplies.

The Opp Drive-In approximately only operated for 12 long years. The Opp Drive-In closed its gates for the final time on April 27, 1964 with Gregory Peck in “To Kill A Mockingbird” as its last film. 3 days later, the Opp News reported on the closing of the theater, as it was closed by George Owen himself.

Today, the property is owned by Cooperative Propane. The area itself is mostly empty with a few large and many small propane tanks on the lot.

The land itself appears to have been plowed or resurfaced sometime between 1967 and 1981, so the ramps are gone. The drive-in does retain its basic shape and there are remnants of the entrance and exit roads. Also, the foundation of the projection booth/concession stand is still present in the overhead view of Google Maps.

A closer address is 914 Florala Hwy, Opp, AL.

Google Maps has updated their addresses and this puts it right where the entrance road used to be.

There is no trace of the drive-in remaining.
