The Pavilion Theatre was opened as a live theatre in 1900. In 1913 it was taken over by the Thomas Ormiston chain and opened as the Pavilion Cinema. In March 1926 it was taken over by the Denman/Gaumont chain. It was renamed Gaumont on 25th February 1952. It was closed on 15th August 1959.

It was converted into the Majestic Ballroom and was operated by the Rank Organisation. It was destroyed by fire on 20th May 1963. The ruins were cleared in 1966 and the site became a car park for the adjacent Odeon which later became a bingo club.
