My grandfather Albert S. “Al” Johnson owned Johnson Construction Company. The Grand Theatre in Brighton Michigan was one of his projects. My uncle’s research listed the 1941 job as the “Washington Theatre.” My grandfather left behind a Kodachrome slide shot in August 1948 showing the theater as the “Grand”.
A post on the Brighton Area Historical Society Facebook page says that “the Washington Theatre building was opened in 1926. It was located in the red brick building and you entered through the far door on the right. The theatre ran across the back end of the building. It was closed for a period in the early-1930’s during the Great Depression”.

The Grand (later “Washington”) Theatre shared the building with the Van Camp Chevrolet auto dealership, which can be seen in the image that Al Johnson shot in August 1948.
