Victory Cinema

Located in the Portobello district to the east of the city. The building was opened prior to 1902. It was described in licensing documents as “a hall with lavatories”. In 1910 it was converted into a roller-skating rink which continued into 1911. American showman Wilbur Harlen purchased the building and it reopened as the Bungalow Electric Theatre in 1912. It was a basic wooden structure, with wooden forms for seating in the front rows of the single floor auditorium which had exposed woodroof trusses and was illuminated by gas lights.

It was rebuilt to the plans of architect Lennox D. Paterson, reopening on 12th November 1942 as the Victory Cinema, operated by George Palmer as part of his Associated G.P. Cinemas chain. It had a 16ft wide proscenium and was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. Later operated by the Forth Cinema Company, it was still open in 1954, but had closed by 1958.
