The Lima Mall Theatre was announced in 1964 as a single-screen, 1,000 seats theatre for roadshow films, six channel stereo across 28 speakers and 70mm projection. Broumas Theatres Circuit designed the complex and eventually opened with wider rows and a more modest 700-seat count. The theatre launched as the American Mall Theatre and with the Miss Limaland beauty contest held on March 15 and March 22, 1966. The Miss Ohio Beauty Pageant was also hosted at the theatre by TV personality Merv Griffin on April 23, 1966.
The American Mall Theatre’s Grand Opening with films occurred on May 3, 1966 with David Niven in “Where the Spies Are.” The theatre closed February 3, 1975 to split the venue into two 330-seat auditoriums. Screen I reopened on March 18, 1975 with “The Groove Tube” and Screen II debuted the next day with “The Stepford Wives.” The complex was renamed as American Mall Cinema I & II. The theatre screened such hits as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” “Superman,” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark”.
The venue received competition in 1978 when General Cinema opened a triplex as an outparcel extension that added 21 stores to the shopping complex. In 1993 the twin screen cinema closed as did the triplex but the American Mall was home to the Regal American Mall Stadium 12 which launched March 3, 2006.
