From 1913, Chicoutimi had its theater known as the Théâtre Populaire. Built on Racine Street, it houses a cinema and a theater that can accommodate up to 400 spectators. In January 1926, it was replaced by a new, much more spacious and luxurious theater. Built at a cost of $ 85,000 by the entrepreneur Robin from Chicoutimi, the new Chicoutimi theater will accommodate up to 630 people.

The Capitol Theater was at the time a vast cultural complex which, in addition to presenting concerts, theater and cinema, housed in adjoining rooms a billiards room, a bowling alley and an arena. Richly decorated, this theater is the glory of Chicoutimi with distinguished guests such as Fernandel, Tino Rossi and Charles Trenet. The latter even said in an interview in Montreal “in Chicoutimi, I found much better than here. You would have every interest in seeing this theater ”. unfortunately, the Capitol will be demolished in the early 1990s.
