In Sunderland, the Gaiety Theatre opened as a cinema just before Christmas, on 22nd December 1913 with “They Will Be Done”. There were 750 seats; the proscenium was 30ft wide.

In 1921 the East End Picture Palace Company took over, with Percy Pawson as the manager.

In 1932 the first talkie, “Dancing Dynamite”, starring George Raft, was screened, and Billy Bolam became the manager.

During the 1930’s talent nights were held, with groceries given out as prizes.

The Gaiety Theatre closed in March 1958. The building was demolished and flats now occupy the site.
