The Victory Cinema was originally the Smyma Chapel, whist became the Sunderland Nursing Institute building, and was converted into the Victory Cinema in 1920. It presented cine-variety and around 1929 was equipped with a Perfectone sound system. The last film to be screened at the Victory Cinema was Barton McLane in “Gangs of Chicago”. The cinema was destroyed by German bombs on 15th April 1941.

The Victory Cinema was formerly the Smyrna Chapel at the junction of Borough Road and Smyrna Place. It opened in 1920 and was an alternative cinema to the Gaiety for the people of the East End. It was damaged by bombs on 15th April 1941 and never re-opened.
