The Empress Theatre was the silent movie house of Gordon, Nebraska. Opened in December of 1911, the Empress Theatre had six changes of programs a week - the only theatre in Northwest Nebraska to do so. The theatre would be purchased by the Pace family who decided to build a new, built-for-sound theatre - the Pace Theatre - in 1930.

Prior to the opening of the Pace Theatre, the Empress Theatre was equipped for sound with “The Melody Man” as the first talkie in town on March 24, 1930. The theatre would close on September 6, 1930 with Joan Crawford in “Blushing Brides”. The Pace Theatre would open the following day.

Just weeks later, the former Empress Theatre was retrofitted for a new JC Penney’s department store.

Assuming JC Penney’s remained at the same location until they closed the address would be 116 North Main Street.
