Cameo Theatre

Film Daily reported November 25, 1935, the Cameo Theatre, formerly the Star Theatre, had opened. This may have been been a new location as well as Motion Picture Daily reported on November 29 that L.H. Lewis had opened the Cameo Theatre in a former store room. Sanborn Maps 1925 show a theatre at 520 Whittier Boulevard and a February 9, 1924, Moving Picture World noted the Star Theatre manager was a Mr. McMurray.

A circa 1933 photograph from the Montebello Historical Society Facebook shows a then and now composite of the Star Theatre compared to the location today. Showing on the one line marquee is a Richard Dix film, possibly “Ace Of Aces”. On the opposite side of the the street, painted on the top side of a building, is “Olander”, a familiar name in Montebello.

On October 28, 1937, Film Daily reported the Cameo Theatre had been transferred to A.J. Olander. Later issues of Boxoffice Magazine reported when Al Olander of the Cameo Theatre and Vogue Theatre was a visitor to the Los Angeles film row and in March 1939 the Cameo Theatre was no longer mentioned.

Film Daily Year Book’s 1940 to 1947 lists the 330 seat Cameo Theatre as closed and then later delisted.
