Dukate’s Theatre opened as a playhouse on July 4, 1899, and in 1910 began to advertise movies. The Gulfport Daily Herald reported in 1921 the theatre had closed some years ago and was in dilapidated condition until the First National Bank moved into the building.
On August 12, 1960, the Herald reported on the history of the 700 seat Dukate’s Theatre. It was built by W.K.M. Dukate, a prominent seafood canner and was called “The pride of the coast”. Mr. Dukate didn’t build it as business decision but to bring culture to Biloxi.
An 1899 drawing of Dukate’s which was republished with the story matches the 2004 restoration of the BancorpSouth building at the location today. The Sun Herald at the time of the restoration noted the building was designed by Theodore Brune, a German born architect.
