The Theatre Royal and Hippodrome was opened in 1814. In the early-1900’s, it was screening films as an attraction to the programme. In January 1915 it was refurbished and re-decorated and became a repertory theatre and was operated by F.H. Cooper. By August 1928 it was screening films and soon was taken over by the Union Cinema Co. Ltd. It used a rear projection system, with the projection box located on the stage behind the screen.
The Theatre Royal was destroyed by a fire at 1.20am on 12th May 1936. The fire had started on the stage area.
Union Cinema Co. Ltd. built a new Theatre Royal on the site which opened on 6th April 1938. (It has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
