Tri State Drive-In

The Tri-State Drive-In opened on June 18, 1959 with Walt Disney’s “The Shaggy Dog”. It served the tri-state area of West Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio. The drive-in was featured in the March 7, 1960 issue of BoxOffice.

The Tri-State Drive-In wired speakers to the eight houses overlooking the screen. Its boxoffice floor was 18 inches below ground level so the cashier would be at eye level with cars' occupants. The drive-in could hold 800 cars and cost $190,000 to build. Its color scheme was aquamarine, and its yellow and blue marquee was topped by a triangle.

The 1961 Motion Picture Almanac said the Tri-State Drive-In was owned by Louis Marcks. It was still open in the early-1980’s.

The site is now a swap meet and antiques store(Chesapeake Flea Market and Antiques), a mattress store(Mattress Mart), and a jewellery and coin store(The Midas Touch) and a fraternity(American Legion). The ramps and fences and exit road and exit gate(and snack bar and bio box?) are still there. The entrance road(and ticket booth and marquee and speakers and speaker posts?) is gone. Unknown if the screen is still there?

It looks like the Tri-State Drive-In opened on June 18, 1959 with Walt Disney’s “The Shaggy Dog”. Aerial views show the theater still in operation until the early-1980s.

Only a few hints of ramps, the exit road (which is now the main entrance), and pieces of the original entrance road remain.
