The Perring Plaza Shopping Center launched theatre-less in Baltimore on November 1, 1962 anchored by E.J. Korvette’s Department Store. Success led to expansion announced in 1964 with the announcement of a F.W. Woolworth’s variety store and a new General Cinema Theatre. Following an open house on February 13, 1966, the GCC Perring Plaza Cinema launched on February 16, 1966 with Sophia Loren in “Judith”.
The single-screen theatre closed in the summer of 1973 to twin the auditorium. It re-emerged on June 21, 1973 as the Perring Plaza Cinema I & II with “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Cohill, U.S. Marhsall”. At the 20th Anniversary of the Perring Plaza Cinema in 1986, the twin screen theaters began to give way to multiplexes and General Cinema announced a new 10-screen, 2,650 seat theatre at a project called Townson Commons. That theatre would effectively replace the aging twin-screener.
However, the Towson Commons project stalled not launching until 1992. So the Perring Plaza continued until January 20, 1992 when it closed with the films, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Kuffs”. The building was imploded and replaced by a Home Depot. General Cinema’s Towson finally opened May 22, 1992 as a paired down eight screen operation. The former theatre listed Baltimore and Towson though now seems to address to Parkville.
