Originally built as a Post Office, the Pastime Theatre launched in 1912 in downtown Ottawa. Under that name, it operated as a silent theatre. Under Midland Theatre ownership, the Pastime Theatre was refreshed with a new sound system and renamed the Strand Theatre in the Fall of 1929. Under Fox ownership next, it sometimes was called the Fox Strand Theatre.
When the Fox Circuit opened the Plaza Theatre on February 7, 1934, the Strand Theatre was discontinued. The Strand Theatre was converted for retail use by Litwin’s Department Store in 1940. In 2018 it is a special event venue.

The theatre building was originally built as the Post Office. It still says Post Office at the top. The other Post Office in Ottawa was built in 1913, so it likely replaced the one that the Pastime Theatre took over in 1912. Today that one is a private events venue. Below is the original.
