The building was originally a cafe which had an additional entrance on Haymarket. The Tatler News Theatre was opened on 16th December 1937. All seating was on a single floor. In July 1964 it was taken over by the Classic Cinemas chain. It was renamed Classic Cinema on 9th November 1969 and went over to feature films, the first being an extended run of Peter Fonda in “Easy Rider”.
On 20th September 1970 it became a cinema club screening adult films. It was re-named Tatler Cinema Club in February 1972 and strip-tease performances became part of the programming. On 4th November 1979 it became a general cinema again and was re-named Classic Cinema. It was closed on 24th August 1980 and it was converted into retail use and a bank.

Photos uploaded of both entrances. Newcastle, like all major cities, is all the poorer without its many cinemas of all sizes and styles. Even the smaller ones such as the Tatler/Classic added that certain extra interest amidst the shops and businesses of the vibrant metropolis.
