Named after the neighborhood it is located in and not the famous Avenue des Champs-Elysees (which is a short distance away). The Theatre des Champs-Elysees was opened on 2nd April 1913. It was the first Art Deco style building to be built in Paris and was designed as an opera house with seating in orchestra and three balcony levels. The World Premiere of Igor Stravinski’s “Rite of Spring” was staged here on 29th May 1913 which caused a riot. In the late-1930’s and until at least 1946 it operated as a cinema.
The building also contains two smaller theatres the Comedie des Champs-Elysees, located on the 3rd floor, which has 630 seats in orchestra and two balconies and the Studio des Champs-Elysees, located on the 5th floor, which has seating in 249 seats in orchestra and a single balcony which opened in 1923.
