Opening with 2-screens on December 9, 1983 a third screen opened the next week on December 16. Located in a then-new food park annex, the Grossmont Mall Triplex became the second of four locations operated by Pacific Theatres in and about Grossmont Center. The first—for which this inside-mall construction was a nice complement—was a shopping center satellite-building, the 70mm-capable Cinema Grossmont - a magnificent, thousand-seat single-screen acquired from Statewide. The third, Grossmont Trolley, was an eightplex below and abutting the center; and the fourth, Grossmont Center, a tenplex that replaced this triplex and was later sold to Reading Cinemas. Grossmont Mall shared management and marquee with Cinema Grossmont while that single was still open.
However, Grossmont Mall Triplex had decent seating capacities in its own right (450, 424, and 290, respectively). The 450-seater had Dolby Stereo and was later upgraded to 70mm projection. Notable engagements included “The Color Purple”, “The Silence of the Lambs” and a 70mm run of “Far and Away”. Well run, the Grossmont Mall Triplex interior was comfortable with warm decor. The exterior was sharp and contemporary—with a high brass overhang leading out into the mall. In the mall foyer there was also an old-fashion-themed but very large and modern, fully-enclosed, island box office. In the 1980’s this foyer was THE hangout for those aligned with the area’s Punk scene.
