Pacific Theaters opened this 8 screen theater on June 20, 1991. The largest two screens each had 450 seats. Shortly after this theater opened, the nearby Cinema Grossmont, a large single screen theater also operated by Pacific, closed.
The Grossmont Trolley theater was comfortable, but did not have stadium seating. It closed on February 27, 2006. It became a Best Buy store, followed by a Michaels Arts & Crafts store.

The Google Street View is locked on the right location. I got the details wrong about the subsequent use of the building following the cinema closure – the building was not demolished, but was subdivided into separate retail stores and restaurants. After I started working for Pacific Theatres in Nov 2000 (Clairemont Town Square location) and got refamiliarized with the projectors, I would get called to cover projection shifts at the Trolley 8 (and the other Pacific Theatres locations in San Diego County). Was sorry to see it close but with the Pacific Grossmont Center 10 having recently expanded from 8 to 10 screens, it didn’t make sense to keep the Trolley 8 (which was just down the hill).
