Evansville’s second twin cinema to be developed by Edward C. Engelbrecht and operated by Carrols Development Corp, was in most ways a duplication of the earlier Carrols Twin Cinema in Town Center, however the color scheme was black and red and the seats were not rocking chairs. Two 300 seat theaters opened off a central lobby with ample onsite parking. The cinema was named after the nearby Washington Square Mall but wasn’t actually on mall property. It was across Monroe Avenue from the southeast corner of the mall parking lot.
Operation of the cinema passed to the owner of Evansville’s Eastpark and Westside theaters in the early-1980’s when that organization also took over Carrols Twin Cinema. It opened January 12, 1973 and closed February 28, 1988 after becoming a bargain theater. Later the building was used as a church, then a nightclub and was then demolished. In recent years a senior condo development has been built there.
