Frank Gould opened the neighborhood Rex Theatre in 1912. It was then associated with the Werner Circuit. When the Franklin Theater Co. took over the Werner Circuit, Reading’s Rex Theatre was in the same family as the Colonial, Princess, Schuykill, San Toy, Princess, Queen, Savoy, Royal and Victoria. In 1936, the theatre became an independent leaning heavily on exploitation films. It appears to have ceased operations after the May 31, 1938 showing of “Race Suicide” starring Willy Castello.

From March 19, 1918, the theatre was given the patriotic Liberty Theatre moniker which it retained for about a year. On March 6, 1919, the theatre reverted to its original namesake of the Rex Theatre.
