Globe Cinema

The Theatre Royal was opened in 1896. It screened films as part of the programme in 1897 & 1898. By 1914 it was in live theatre use only. It closed in 1915 and the gallery seating area was removed. The dress circle was improved and it reopened as a cinema (still named Theatre Royal) in 1916. This only lasted a matter of months before it closed again.

It re-opened as the Globe Cinema with 600 seats. It had a 20ft wide proscenium. It closed as a silent cinema on 2nd June 1930.

In 2017 the former cinema is in use as the ballroom to the adjacent Freemasons Arms hotel & pub.
