Built and opened in 1933 the Cine Rex was designed by Gent based architect Geo Henderick who was inspired by the Grand Rex in Paris, France. The hall was decorated very decoratively with beautiful paintings with relief pieces of buildings that were beautifully lit in the dark. The ceiling displayed a nightly summer sky with sparkling stars and passing clouds. The curtain, made of silver lily with light voile behind it was highlighted with colorful floodlights during the break while the most recent, mostly French, records of that time were turned. Seating was provided in orchestra & balcony levels. Later the interior was modernized and the beautiful decoration disappeared for a meaningless plain style.
The Cine Rex closed on June 16, 1982, reopened at the end of 1982, but ended definitively in 1985.
In the 1990’s the cinema was used as the Capitole Casino, but the Cine Rex is now disused for over 20 years. It is a listed building.
