Located in the West Midlands Black Country town of Wednesbury. The New Theatre Royal was opened on 8th February 1892 with the play “The Mysteries of the Seven Sisters” It was designed by architectural firm Messrs Joynson Brothers. Seating was provided in stalls and a single circle which was supported by pillars and had slips extending to the proscenium. From 1910 it began presenting variety & revue shows and was re-named Theatre Royal and Hippodrome.
By March 1927 it had been re-named Hippodrome Theatre. It was refurbished and re-seated in the summer of 1936. In 1951 it was equipped to screen films and operated as a cinema Monday-Wednesday, with live theatre Thursday-Saturday, and ran this policy until 1955 when it reverted back to solely live theatre performances. The Hippodrome Theatre was closed on 10th October 1959 with a production of “Gigi” by the Derwent Players.
It was demolished in the early-1960’s.
