Built by ABC Southeastern Theaters the Hoover Twin opened on December 20, 1977 with Clint Eastwood in “The Gauntlet”. Two days later, screen two opened with Gene Wilder in “The World’s Greatest Lover”.
In the fall of 1978 ABC, which also operated the Alabama Theatre and Ritz Theatre in downtown as well as the Roebuck Theatre and Bessemer Twin Theatre along Birmingham’s northern arc, sold its theatre interests to Plitt Theatres. In 1980, Plitt sold its Birmingham locations to Cobb Theatres. This left Cobb, which years before had bought out the Waters chain as well as the stand alone Capri Theatre and Midfield Theatre, was now in control of the Birmingham theatre market save for a few independent drive-ins. It would be interesting to read the story of how this passed the anti-trust smell test.
In 1983, Cobb Theatres opened the Hoover Square 6 just down Highway 31 and closed this location on April 1, 1984 with Sean Marshall in “Pete’s Dragon” & Albert Finney in “The Dresser”. For years the building was home to a church and is now serving as the HQ for the Hoover Police Department.

On June 19, 1981, Cobb purchased the Hoover Twin and a variety of other Plitt properties. Cobb built the Hoover Square 6 launching June 10, 1983. It repositioned the Twin as a discount, sub-run venue. What many initially hoped was just an April Fool’s joke became a permanent closure on April 1, 1984 with Cobb moving on after showtimes of “Pete’s Dragon” and “The Dresser.”
