Southampton Playhouse

Around 2005, the auditorium block of original 1,062-seat Southampton Theatre (opened in 1932, it has its own page on Cinema Treasures) was demolished. United Artists constructed four new auditoriums behind the original façade. It was last operated by the Regal Entertainment Group.

On May 21, 1996 the Southampton 4 Theatres opened as a first-run theatre, popular with the areas numerous celebrities including director Barry Sonnenfeld. It was closed on March 17, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was announced in April 2021 that the closure would be permanent as the owner was trying to sell the building. It was sold in November 2022 and renovations began in August 2023. It was reopened on February 13, 2025 as an IMAX theatre named Southampton Playhouse. 35mm projection is used to screen classic movies.

Reports that there are plans to repurpose as a cultural arts center. Problem with that is limited parking.

Billionaire Aby Rosen was behind the 8 million dollar purchase of the theatre in November 2022 by Hill Street Cinema LLC. Scaffolding is now up around the theatre. See photo I’ve uploaded. Interior renovations are also planned. Movies will again be shown but, probably, not exclusively.

Will be called The Southampton Playhouse. The original marquee will be retained. It will introduced IMAX to the Hamptons. Have not seen any indication of the new layout or how many auditoriums will result. As a non-profit they are already soliciting membership. Originally reported to open before 2015 but this being the end of October makes that unlikely. Maybe a Christmas opening?

Currently open are the IMAX Auditorium 1 and Dolby Atmos Auditorium 2. Auditorium 3 is expected to open in a few weeks and Auditorium 4 sometime in the late spring.

So glad that the Southampton and other eastern Long Island theatres have reopened: Greenport, Mattituck, Sunset (Hampton Arts).
